2.1 The IUE Merged Observing Log

 The IUE merged observing log has been updated roughly quarterly. Even though satellite operations ended in September, 1996, the IUE database is still updated as images are reprocessed with the New Spectral Image Processing System, (i.e., NEWSIPS). This reprocessing was completed at the end of 1997, and a final version of the merged log should be produced in 1998. To search for specific images, you may run the menu-driven procedure SEARCH. Type:

SEARCH,RESET,iuelist,feslist,fmtfile=file

RESET 15 element string array of search parameters. If you do not care about having the search parameters saved, it can be considered a dummy variable.
IUELIST Optional output array of entry numbers for spectral images found in the IUELOG database (LWP, LWR, SWP, and SWR cameras).
FESLIST Optional output array of entry numbers for FES images found in the IUEFES database.
FMTFILE Name of file containing formatting information used with the ``make your own'' print format option. You can create such files within SEARCH.

The ``iuelist'' and ``feslist'' arrays may be used interactively with the database routines called by SEARCH. If you do not plan to run these routines, there is no reason to include these parameters. They are described in !iuer_inf:dbexpert.txt as listed below.

The menus you will see in SEARCH are shown on the next two pages.

Once you have a list of images, you can use Option 49 to write the list to a file which is readable with IUEFX, and submit a data request to NDADS (for IUELOG entries only).

If you are using a windowing workstation, there is a ``widget'' version of SEARCH called W_SEARCH. It has exactly the same parameters as SEARCH, but it displays a panel full of buttons with which you make your search selections. The output and options of W_SEARCH are essentially the same as those of SEARCH.

You may also search the database via the World Wide Web. The URL is:

http://archive.stsci.edu/iue/search.php

Further information on the Merged Observing Log can be found in !iuer.inf in the files described below:

DBEXPERT.TXT   How to use the database routines interactively in the ``expert'' mode. SEARCH is a driver for these routines.

IUEFES.TXT   Information about the IUEFES database.

IUELOG.TXT   Information about the IUELOG database.

SEARCH.TXT   Detailed information about SEARCH, including print formats, etc.

You will see the following menu when you enter SEARCH:

20) Review search parameters selected.
21) Select the print format & print list.
22) Begin new search.
23) Append search.

39) Delete all present selection criteria.
49) Request IUELOG images from NDADS.
59) Submit a NEWSIPS processing request.
99) Exit. Return from the program.

Type the number of the desired search parameter:

Simply type in the number corresponding to the criteria you are interested in. Multiple criteria may be selected. Sorted searches are the best to use because they are significantly faster. Once the criteria are selected, the search can be executed using option (22). Option (21) allows you to change the format of your output and/or to send the output to a file or to your default printer. Here is the menu of formats:

What print format would you like?
(Options 1-9 are Terminal format.)

    1 = General Information.  (default)
    2 = Exposure Information
    3 = Information from G.O. for Operations
        (includes positional information).
    4 = Additional Exposure Information
    5 = Engineering Data.
    6 = Read Down Information.
    7 = Observation Information.
    8 = Processing information.
    9 = Full listing: Not in table format.
   10 = 'Make-your-own' print format (only for use with IUELOG).
