THE EUVE Observatory started the all sky survey  on  Friday  July
24.   The  Checkout  and Calibration phase has concluded and con-
firmed that the EUVE instruments are working flawlessly.

During checkout some 22 EUV sources were  detected  including  at
least two new EUV sources that are not previously reported.

At least four of the EUV sources  observed  during  the  checkout
period were observed to be variable during the observation.

Detected backgrounds in all 7 detectors are nominal,  with  back-
ground countrates due to geocoronal and  inter-planetary emission
being close to the predicted values.  The  observed  count  rates
while  observing down the Earth's shadow cone are very, very low.
No ram glow effects have been detected.

Instrument sensitivities are close to the predicted  values  from
pre-launch calibration, indicating no significant change in cali-
bration since the calibration three years ago.

The instruments were checked for any possible UV leaks by observ-
ing bright B stars. No significant UV leaks were found.

The observed instrument point spread functions are close  to  the
expected  values indicating that the imaging is nominal.  All the
instrument boresights have been calibrated.

The only unexplained instrument anomaly at this time is the occa-
sional  detection  of  short-duration,  high-count-rate bursts of
detector events. Twenty eight bursts have  been  seen,  with  the
bursts only occurring in 3 of the 7 detectors. The bursts are not
of astronomical origin and may  be  due  to  detector  outgassing
events. The bursts have no impact on science.

During the first month of operation one Single  Event  Upset  was
detected, requiring re-setting of a section of the memory.

The EUVE spacecraft is operating  smoothly.  During  the  pointed
calibrations  the  spacecraft  stability  was  better  than 2 arc
seconds. This is fantastic.

THE EUVE Science Operations software and image  processing  pipe-
lines  are operating smoothly. The pipelines are operating at ap-
proximately 45% of real time. The standard science data  products
are being generated on schedule.

The first EUVE data has been released through the EUVE Public Ar-

The spectrum of  an  anonymous  source  detected  in  the  medium
wavelength  spectrometer has been released in the public archive.
The spectrum shows absorption at 170 angstroms due to the absorp-
tion edge aluminum from the filter on the detector.

The table showing which  ROSAT  WFC  brights  sources  have  been
detected has also been updated.

issues of the EUVE electronic newsletter on the public archive.

mail  message  containing  the  word  "help" (omit quotes) on the
first     line,     with     no     preceding     spaces,      to;  a  file  containing information on the

mail  server  is designed for processing requests for information
automatically, mail messages which do not address the server pro-
gram are sent to Archive personnel for a response.

Note to all archive users: NASA is currently establishing the ex-
act  data rights policy on EUVE spectra released through the EUVE
public archive. Until this policy is  clarified,  scientists  who
obtain  the  EUVE spectra should confine the use of these spectra
in assisting the planning  of  EUVE  observations  and  analyzing
their  own  GO  data. The publicly released spectra are not to be
used as the basis of scientific publications at this time.
