Dear Colleague, Welcome to the first edition of the "Observer's Electronic Newsletter" from NASA's Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) project at the Johns Hopkins University. This Newsletter is intended to help the FUSE user community keep abreast of interesting and useful events related to the mission. We plan to distribute this Newsletter monthly, with occasional "extras" if special events warrant it. It is our intention to keep it "short and sweet", with a minimum of text in the actual e-mail (this first issue will, by necessity, be something of an exception). Rather, we will be directing you to the FUSE Web site for more complete information and any lengthy items. We have used primarily the lists of PI science team members and PIs of accepted cycle 1 Guest Investigator proposals as our initial distribution list for this initial Newsletter. If you know of other people who would want to receive this Newsletter - e.g. GI Co-Is - please forward this to them and have them follow the instructions at the end of this message to "subscribe." Similarly, should you decide that you do not want to receive these e-mails, you can "unsubscribe" per below. Comments and suggestions are, of course, also welcome, but send those to the FUSE Support account at fuse_support@pha.jhu.edu. Your FUSEUSENEWS editor. Satellite Related Events: ---------------------------- FUSE was moved to GSFC for environmental and optical testing on Aug. 13, after completion of satellite integration at the JHU Applied Physics Laboratory. Vibration and acoustics test are under way. We expect that FUSE will go into the vacuum tank at the end of September for thermal and optical/UV testing during October and November. Shipping to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station is scheduled for mid December. As you know, launch is scheduled for late winter. => We have just begun posting a weekly satellite status report update under the "FUSE Facts" section of the JHU Web site. It can be found at: Phase 2 (GI) Related Events: Phase 2 (GI) Related Events: ---------------------------- > An initial informational message regarding Phase 2 was sent to GIs on Aug. 11. > A second informational message to GIs was sent on Aug. 13. > Phase 2 templates were sent out on Aug. 13. (All in electronic form.) If you are the PI on an accepted Cycle 1 program and did NOT receive the above messages (and especially the Phase 2 template file), please contact us immediately at fuse_support@pha.jhu.edu. => Phase 2 instructions are available at: >>>>> The deadline for GI Phase 2 Submissions is Friday, Oct. 9, 1998.<<<<< (Moving Target and TOO programs have until Nov. 13, 1998.)
