The following images are science instrument and related images produced by the IUE project.
Comet Halley - 138kb
This figure shows a spatially-resolved low resolution SWP
"line-by-line" image of Comet Halley. Prominent emission
features are identified. Both large and small apertures appear in
geocoronal Lyman Alpha.
HD 192163, A Wolf-Rayet Star - 152kb
This figure presents the raw and processed SWP high dispersion spectrum
for the Wolf-Rayet star HD 192163. The line tracings show the line
profiles due to absorption and emission by He II (1640 Å) and N IV
(1718 Å), indicating strong mass outflow. These lines are seen in
the raw image as the two bright bands, with N IV on the left.
Comet IRAS-Araki-Alcock - 48kb
Comet IRAS-Araki-Alcock was the 7th comet discovered in 1983. This
figure includes an FES image of the comet showing its diffuse tail and
the LWR spectrum depicting the molecular emission lines of sulfur
(S2) and hydroxyl (OH).
NGC 1068 - 33kb
This is a CCD image of the Seyfert I galaxy NGC 1068 taken at Cerro Tololo
Inter-American Observatory in Chile with the IUE entrance aperture (10 x
20 arcseconds) shown over a starburst knot.
NGC 5548 - 80kb
This is a montage of 59 line-by-line SWP spectra, taken every 4 days, of
NGC 5548 from December 1988 through August 1989. The vertical axis
represents time, and the horizontal axis corresponds to wavelength
increasing toward the right (1200 to 2000 Å). It is possible to
see the correlated variations of the slightly redshifted Lyman Alpha and
C IV emission lines.
Quasar PKS 0405-123 - 95kb
The combined SWP and LWR line-by-line spectra covering from 1200 Å
to 3200 Å of the quasar PKS 0405-123 are shown. The moderately
redshifted Lyman Alpha, C IV, and C III] are indicated along with the
geocoronal Lyman Alpha.
Supernova 1987A - 110kb
The several absorption components of the C IV resonance lines are
superimposed on a raw SWP high dispersion image of Supernova 1987A in the
Large Magellanic Cloud. The supernova was bright enough for this type of
image in this wavelength range only for a few days following its
discovery on 24 February 1987.
Supernova 1992A - 95kb
This is an optical CCD image of Supernova 1992A taken at Cerro Tololo
Inter-American Observatory superimposed with an LWP spectrum obtained 8
hours after the announcement of its discovery, and 3 days before visual
maximum.
Z Andromeda - 83kb
This is a superposition of an IUE low dispersion line-by-line image of
the symbiotic star Z Andromedae with the corresponding extracted
spectrum. Twelve strong emission lines are identified.
