FRESCO footprints on the sky
Footprint on the sky of the FRESCO survey. FRESCO covers the two CANDELS/Deep regions in the GOODS-S and -N fields, which are among the most valuable extragalactic legacy fields in the full sky. Among others, the FRESCO fields overlap with the original HUDF/XDF. The FRESCO mosaics were obtained in a 4x2 mosaic with partial overlap for optimal wavelength coverage. The total area amounts to 7.3x8.5 arcmin2 both with grism spectroscopy and medium band imaging, which further enhances the legacy value of these fields.

Overview

The First Reionization Epoch Spectroscopically Complete Observations (FRESCO) program consists of JWST spectroscopic and imaging observations designed to cover optimally the two CANDELS/Deep regions in the GOODS-South and -North fields, which are among the most valuable extragalactic legacy fields in the full sky. The core of FRESCO is NIRCam slitless grism observations, which result in a spectrum for every source in the field-of-view. FRESCO follows in the footsteps of numerous successful grism surveys conducted with HST but with greater sensitivity, at longer wavelength, and with spectral resolution a factor 10X higher. Three direct and out-of-field images were taken in the F444W filter to associate the spectra with individual galaxies.

Simultaneous with the grism spectra, FRESCO obtained NIRCam medium band images in two short-wavelength filters (F182M and F210M) to extend the space-based legacy data in these fields to 1.8 and 2.1 μm down to 28.3 mag (at 5σ). These data improve the UV spectral slope measurement of z > 7 galaxies and, at lower redshift, allow the community to push rest-frame optical imaging analyses beyond the peak of cosmic star formation, from z ~ 2.5 to beyond z ~ 4. Altogether, the FRESCO mosaics cover a total area of 7.3x8.5 arcmin2 both with grism spectroscopy and medium band imaging, which further enhances the legacy value of these fields.

The FRESCO collection also includes deep HST mosaics derived from data taken by Hubble over 18 years across the GOODS-North and GOODS-South regions. These include ultraviolet, optical and infrared imaging the original GOODS-N/S, HUDF, CANDELS, HUDF09/12, UVUDF, HDUV and other programs. These mosaics are registered to the JWST mosaics and are the same scale and footprint.

Data Products

This release of the data product collection consists of combined images from JWST as well as HST in multiple bands. The collection will also include deep NIRCam grism observations in a future release. All images were processed by the Grizli data processing pipeline. The images are pixel-aligned across all filters and the astrometry is tied to GAIA DR3. The scale of the images for the GOODS-N is set at 0.04 arcsec/pixel and is 17408 x 17408 pixels (11.6 x 11.6 arcmin) in size. The GOODS-S is set at 0.04 arcsec/pixel and is 12288 x 13312 pixels (8.2 x 8.9 arcmin) in size. Also provided in the GOODS-S fields are mosaics in the short wavelength filters F182M and F210M with a sampling of 0.02 arcsec/pixel.

The data file naming convention is:

  • <tel> is the telescope name, either jwst or hst
  • <instr> is the instrument name, one of nircam, acs-wfc, wfc3-uvis, or wfc3-ir
  • <fieldID> is either goods-n or goods-s
  • <filter> is the filter used, one of:
    • f182m, f210m, f430m, f444w, f460m, f480m for JWST
    • f435w, f475w, f606w, f775w, f814w, f850lp for HST/ACS
    • f105w, f110w, f125w, f140w, f160w, for HST/WFC3-IR

FRESCO images are available in the MAST Portal (web-based, cross-mission search interface) and Astroquery (Python package to search for and download files from Python scripts you write), and via the direct download table below.
