HST Data Archive

Retrieval Policies

There is no charge for this service.

The Archive is intended primarily for astronomical researchers who can make scientific use of the data. Access to the Archive may not be appropriate for amateurs, educators, and other interested people whose systems and networks may not be able to handle and store the data available from the Archive; please see our note about the format of the data.

Each registrant will be provided with an Archive retrieval password, which the retrieval pages in StarView or the Archive-Web interface will ask for when the user retrieves data.

Data retrieved by registered users will be written to the staging disk of the archive host machine. The user may then FTP the data to its final destination through via FTP.

A user's archive account will be maintained for one year after the last time it was used to retrieve data.

Each registrant will be given a retrieval quota:

  • External users: 20 gigabytes
  • Internal users: 40 gigabytes
This quota will be in effect for one year. Users who exceed this quota may request one extension. Further extensions will require justification.
