The Panoramic Survey Telescope & Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) is a wide-field imaging facility developed at the University of Hawaii's Institute for Astronomy, with the primary goal of discovering and characterizing Earth-approaching objects, both asteroids & comets, that might pose a danger to our planet.
Pan-STARRS Data Release 2 (DR2) Information:
On Jan 28, 2019 MAST (Mikulski Archive for Space Telescope) released the second edition of data from PanSTARRS. This second release (PS1 DR2) contains over 1.6 petabytes of data, making it the largest volume of astronomical information ever released. DR2 includes detection-level warps and catalogs for the first time.
There are a number of improvements to MAST interfaces that PanSTARRS users should be aware of:
- New web form to query both the DR1 and DR2 catalog databases
- New API structure and a notebook tutorial to easily interact with API
- Access to single-epoch ('warp') images via the PS1 image cutout server
- Retrieve stacked image data through the MAST portal
Users can also continue to use Casjobs for larger, more complicated queries.

- 05/01/18 - The PanSTARRS Stack Object search interface is now public.
- 03/21/17 - Links on search form now describes both queryable and non-queryable columns. Also added links to the PanSTARRS search form and home page in banner.
- 12/21/16 - Due to heavy demand, we are limiting the size of the allowed search radius. Currently search radii must be less than 0.5 degrees for standard searches and 0.02 degrees for file upload queries.
- 12/20/16 - A bug introduced Tuesday night (~5 PM EST) prevented any PanSTARRS searches from running. It was fixed the next morning. In spite of the bug, over 2,100 queries were submitted today.
- 12/19/16 - The PanSTARRS catalog search interface was made public.
