The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Early Release Observations (EROs) are a set of science products created to mark the end of commissioning and the beginning of science operations for JWST. Colloquially known as the "Webb First Images and Spectra", these products were intended to demonstrate to the global public that JWST is ready for science and is capable of producing spectacular results. The package was released on 12 July 2022, and included images and spectra of the galaxy cluster SMACS J0723.3-7327 and distant lensed galaxies, the interacting galaxy group Stephan's Quintet, NGC 3324 in the Carina star-forming complex, the Southern Ring planetary nebula NGC 3132, and the transiting hot Jupiter WASP-96 b.
These products were produced using the best pipeline software and reference files available at the end of commissioning, and some data products are not ready for science (see Pontoppidan et al. 2022). Improved data products will become available at MAST as these data are reprocessed over time. These will be available through improved pipeline products in MAST search interfaces, and at some point will supercede the versions provided here that will transition to historic artifacts. Data products from each instrument will be released as they become available.
Data Release 1 (October 18, 2022)
This release includes images from the MIRI instrument of the galaxy group Stephan's Quintet, the Carina nebula (NGC 3324), the Southern Ring planetary nebula (NGC 3132) and the galaxy cluster SMACS J0723.3-7327.
JWST-ERO image files from MIRI are named according to the following convention:
- <target> is the target (one of "stephansquintet", "smacs0723", "ng3132" or "carina").
- <filter> is the filter used (e.g., "f770w").
Data file types:
|_i2d.fits||Calibrated image file|
Data products can be accessed from the following table. For individual files, download links are provided according to their optical elements. To download all files for an individual target, we provide cURL scripts.
