LMC-FLOWS line spectra of sk-65d22
Examples of S II (top), Si IV (middle), and C IV (bottom) line spectra that are released in this HLSP LMC-FLOWS. The black lines show the original line fluxes and errors, and the red curves show the best-fit continuum models that the team estimated in Zheng et al. (2024). The continuum-normalized line spectra are also provided in each datafile.

Overview

LMC-FLOWS contains continuum-normalized S II (1250Å/1253Å), Si IV (1393Å/1402Å), and C IV (1548Å/1550Å) interstellar absorption lines for the Milky Way and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), processed and released by Zheng et al. (2024). The data are post-processed based on the ULLYSES DR5 data release (Roman-Duval et al. 2020), which includes HST STIS and/or COS spectroscopic observations of 110 massive stars in the LMC. In this HLSP, the ULLYSES DR5 S II, Si IV, and C IV line spectra have been continuum-normalized using the open-source package George (Ambikasaran et al. 2015) based on the concept of Gaussian Process regression. LMC-FLOWS also includes a catalog table that provides the MAST target names of these 110 massive stars, their coordinates, spectral types, the quality (reliable or unreliable) of the corresponding ion interstellar absorption line data (S II, Si IV, or C IV), and the spectrograph/grating used for the data.

Data Products

Spectral data file naming convention:

hlsp_lmc-flows_hst_<instrument>_<target>_<grating>-<line>_v1_spec.<ext>

where:

  • <instrument> is either 'stis' or 'cos'.
  • <target> is the target name, such as 'vfts72'.
  • <grating> is the grating used, one of 'g130m' or 'g160m', 'e140m', or 'e140h'.
  • <line> is the spectral line, one of 's-ii-1250-1253', 'si-iv-1393-1402' or 'c-iv-1548-1550'.
  • <ext> is the file extension, one of 'fits', 'pdf', or 'png'.

Data file types:

_spec.fits Continuum-normalized S II, Si IV, and C IV line spectra in fits format for interstellar absorption lines from the Milky Way and the Large Magellanic Cloud
_spec.pdf Preview PDF image of Continuum-normalized S II, Si IV, and C IV line spectra
_spec.png Preview PNG image of Continuum-normalized S II, Si IV, and C IV line spectra

The catalog data file naming convention is

hlsp_lmc-flows_hst_stis-cos_<dr>-all_multi_v1_cat.txt

         where

  • <dr> is data release,  'dr1'.

The catalog includes 110 massive stars in the LMC from ULLYSES DR5. It provides the MAST target name, RA, DEC, and spectral type of each star. The last six columns indicate the quality (reliable or unreliable) of the corresponding ion interstellar absorption line data (SII, SiIV, or CIV), as well as the spectrograph/grating that was used for the data. For more details, see Section 2 in Zheng et al. (2024).

Data Access

The catalog file can be downloaded directly using this link: hlsp_lmc-flows_hst_stis-cos_dr1-all_multi_v1_cat.txt

All LMC-FLOWS spectra are available in the MAST Portal (web-based, cross-mission search interface) and Astroquery (Python package to search for and download files from Python scripts you write) and via the direct download table below. Set the Provenance Name filter to LMC-FLOWS in the Portal Advanced Search to find all or individual spectra. Each Portal observation contains spectral line data as minimum recommended products (MRP). To retrieve the preview spectral images, select the observations of interest, add them to the download basket, and uncheck MRP in the Download Manager. All products can also be retrieved programmatically using the astroquery—mast module. See the code example below for retrieving and downloading all files.

from astroquery.mast import Observations
all_obs = Observations.query_criteria(provenance_name="lmc-flows")
data_products = Observations.get_product_list(all_obs)
Observations.download_products(data_products)

  • Search for and retrieve LMC-FLOWS data products programmatically.
